The Artists pathway to music industry success

Do you want a career as a music industry professional recognised for your 21st century skills and knowledge, or do you want to be a music teacher with a university degree?

National Music Academy can pride itself on the quality of our facilities, our incredible and holistic 6 sphere music program. Our program is designed by the industry for the industry, as we want to give our students the edge when they graduate not just a piece of paper with no real world experience.

Ask any successful music industry professional where they acquired their skills and knowledge and they’ll tell you they had somebody in the industry mentor them. Historically, this is the way it has always been: an artisan sharing the knowledge and practical skills of life experience with an apprentice. Look at any of the most creative and successful musicians since the beginning of the modern musical age and you’ll see this is true. Gil Evans mentored the young Miles Davis. Miles Davis mentored John Coltrane, Herbie Hancock, Chick Corea, Keith Jarrett, and literally dozens of other young musicians. In fact, it isn’t overstating things to say Miles Davis almost single-handedly invented every popular style of music that has happened since the 1960s. Count Basie mentored Quincy Jones who later went on to mentor Michael Jackson in the finer aspects of music arranging and production.

Mentoring like this doesn’t happen in a lecture hall. For Evans and Davis, many hours were spent simply listening to the recordings of great artists. For Coltrane and others, the bandstand was the classroom for an apprenticeship with Miles Davis. In the case of Quincy Jones and Michael Jackson, the recording studio was the place where the greatest learning occurred. In every case, the apprentice was completely immersed in the world of music. In the words of Charlie Parker, “If you don’t live it, it won’t come out of your horn!”

  • Our goal is to create working musicians – locally, nationally, and internationally
  • Students are immersed in the 6 essential spheres of International music industry knowledge and skills
  • The course components for each of the 6 spheres are interconnected to reveal how each operates in practice within the music industry
  • We encourage lateral thinking for students to see the synergy that exists between course components and to devise novel ways to synthesise new music materials, production processes and skills
  • Our instructors are all successful working musicians, music educators and industry mentors
  • Students are guided individually and collaboratively through a new music project from conception to completion in each and every week of the program
  • These projects ultimately culminate to become part of an EPK for every student
