Being in a choir is so much fun and you can learn so much from joining one. When you are in a choir, you get to meet and make connections with people who love to sing as much as you do and who share your love for music. It is such an amazing environment and it is so interesting to be able to hear the different sounds you can all make together as a group.
Choir programs can also teach you a lot of really useful skills and techniques. One of the most important things you can learn from being in a choir is how to harmonize. Harmonies create interest and add more texture and depth to the sound. If everyone is singing melody all the time, it can get boring. Learning how to create and sing different harmonies is very useful in the choir, but also out of it. It is a great skill to have to be able to accompany other singers and create amazing chords and sounds with just your voices.
Being able to blend with other people is also something that being in a choir can teach. What is blending, you may ask? Well, blending is one of the most important things for a choir be able to do. It involves listening to the singers around you and matching their pitch and tone. If you all do this, it creates a sense of unity and makes the choir sound that much more beautiful. It’s good to be able to listen to the people around you and match your voices and sing as a collective rather than as lots of individual soloists. Part of blending is also about standing next to people who are of similar heights to you. It’s a lot harder to hear someone and be able to blend with them if they’re a really different height to you. For example, Winnie the Pooh would not be able to blend well with the BFG. It just wouldn’t work because they wouldn’t be able to hear each other! That’s why it is important to stand in a rough height order. Not only does it look good, but it sounds good too.
Another really awesome thing about being in a choir is performing. It’s so much fun! The feeling you get when you all absolutely nail the piece you’ve been practicing for months is one of triumph and pride. It’s also really exhilarating to be standing on stage with a group of your friends, singing for an audience. It always makes me smile when we finish singing and the audience claps. It shows me that the music we can make with our voices, brings happiness to people. Not only is it fun, but it can also be really helpful if you wish to perform as a soloist, but are too nervous. To perform in a choir is like the first step on your journey to performing with killer confidence as a soloist. It gets you used to performing for an audience and being on stage, with the support and encouragement of the people around you. Performing for an audience is a lot less nerve-racking if you do it with a group of people. And, you have more fun surrounded by your friends!
I’ve spent all my life in choirs and it truly is an amazing experience and it widely improves your rhythm, harmonies, pitch, confidence, and it’s just so much fun! I’ve made lifelong friends in choirs because I’m surrounded by people who love singing as much as I do. I encourage anyone and everyone who loves singing to join a choir because it’s an experience that you’ll never forget. You definitely won’t regret it, I promise!
