Our Story
In the last 24 years, National Music Academy has grown to become one of the largest providers of music tuition in Newcastle and the Hunter, with the same focus on being dedicated to providing the best possible education to each student, and making every student and parent who walks through our doors feel like they are part of our family.
Our philosophy is simple – teach students to become musicians, not just to be able to play songs on their instrument. We want our students to learn music theory, technique, repertoire and performance in a way that is relevant to their goals, interests and level. While many others may claim to do this, 25 years of experience is the basis of the National Music Academy difference.
We now have over 400 students across Newcastle, Maitland and Lake Macquarie. We have hand-selected 30 of the best teachers in the area and trained them in this NMA philosophy of teaching the best music education with the passion and love that we would show to our own family.
Owner and Director
Nathan Walsh is the current owner and director of the National Music Academy. As a professional musician and educator Nathan Walsh has taught piano, guitar, music theory and song writing to students of all ages, abilities and interests from classical pianists to funky guitarists and budding songwriters.
Nathan has extensive experience in the AMEB, Trinity and HSC Music syllabus and inspires his students to perform well in whatever musical venture they pursue.
As an undergraduate Nathan studied a Bachelor of Music at The Australian Institute of Music and majored in contemporary performance. He has had the opportunity to attend master classes with renowned musicians including Tommy Emmanuel, Evermore and Berklee song writing lecturer Pat Pattison.
Nathan’s professional ventures as a musician have seen him working on many different projects. As an original artist Nathan has written and co-written and recorded on multiple albums across many different genres. As a session musician Nathan has had the opportunity to perform and work alongside highly renowned artists including previous contestants from ‘The Voice, ‘X Factor’ and three time Grammy award winner ‘Sergio Mendes’.
Nathan first took over his first school 'Inner West Music College' as owner and Director in 2019. Since then he has branched out and is now the Owner and Director of multiple schools and ventures including 'All Arts Academy' in Five Dock, 'Music in Schools Australia', 'Bandemonium', 'Walsh Music Group' and 'National Music Academy'.
Nathan's vision is to provide as many students access to quality music education across Australia.
